DADGAD spells itself out: D A D G A D, low to high. The open strings ring a Dsus4 chord with no major or minor third. Why a DADGAD tuner benefits from a strobe
DADGAD has two A strings and three D strings. With so many unisons and octaves ringing at once, the relative tuning between strings is what makes the open tuning sound right or wrong. From standard tuning, three strings move and three stay: the A, D, and G strings stay at concert pitch. You drop the low E down to D, the B down to A, and the high E down to D.
Approach each dropped string from below, detuning past the target and then back up, so the windings settle and the string does not slip flat mid-set. When all six strings show still harmonic rings, strum the open chord. The drone of the low D against the high D should sit cleanly with no beating.

DADGAD was popularised by British guitarist Davey Graham in the 1960s, and a generation of folk fingerstyle players built careers on it. Jimmy Page reached for DADGAD on Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir and Black Mountain Side - two of the most recognisable riffs in rock. Modern fingerstyle players still lean on it for the same reason Graham did: it gives you a drone and a scale at the same time, so one guitar can carry melody and accompaniment.
If you have ever tried to play Kashmir on a standard-tuned guitar, you know why. The riff simply does not exist outside of DADGAD.
